HWP File

What are HWP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a HWP file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.

What is a HWP file?

HWP files have multiple uses, and Hangul Word Processor Document is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Hangul Word Processor Document

HWP is an acronym for Hangul Word Processor. Files that contain the .hwp file extension normally contain documents that have been created by the Korean-based Hangul Word Processor application.

The HWP file format and the Hangul Word Processor were created by the Haansoft Corporation of South Korea to address the needs of those who needed to create computer documents with Korean characters.

HWP files may contain text, document formatting, and graphics, much like the DOCX files created by the popular Microsoft Word application. Unlike Word documents, however, the HWP file format is used primarily to save documents that have been written in the Korean language of Hangul.

How to open HWP files

Important: Different programs may use files with the HWP file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your HWP file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different HWP openers which you will find listed below.
